Why GMA gave me a bloody nose

For the past two weeks, I've known that I would be appearing on Good Morning America. Last Friday I spent two hours on the phone with a GMA writer, who collected anecdotes and information about possible photographs that would be shown on air. The writer followed up with a couple of additional phone calls and e-mails the last couple of days. So although the pending appearance on a national TV show made me a bit nervous, it was a welcome relief to know that there was some preparation on the part of the show.

Chris Cuomo interviewed me for GMA at the ABC studio in the Pepsi Center here in Denver, where the Democratic National Convention is being held.

Cuomo made me feel welcome, and in the moments before the interview started, made sure he knew how to pronounce my last name.

"Any relation?" he asked, presumably meaning to John Philip Sousa, the famed bandleader (who spells his name with a second "S" and not a "Z".)

"He's my great, great grand nothing," I replied. Cuomo laughed and that seemed to relax me even more.

The interview itself was a blur. Several people called and e-mailed to say I had done a great job.
Who knows.

When I got back to my hotel, my nose was a bit stuffy and when I blew into a tissue, blood came pouring out. Probably a combination of the high altitude, a very dry hotel room, and the nerves of being on a national TV show.

End of an era

This photo pays tribute to Sen. Edward Kennedy, who made a dramatic appearance at the Democratic National Convention tonight in Denver. Triumph Books sent me to Denver to publicize my book (I did two television interviews today). This trip also gave me the chance to photograph this historic event tonight. Kennedy has terminal brain cancer, and it was uncertain if he would appear.

Appear he did, making an emotional speech to the delegates.

Ten Radio Interviews

What to do. Last week I was on vacation at our cabin in northern Michigan. We have no phone and no internet. And if I walk ten feet into Douglas Lake, I'm lucky to find one bar on my Iphone (it usually took me ten minutes to just download the latest Red Sox box score).

So when my publisher asked me if I could do a series of ten radio interviews last Thurday, they insisted that I use a land line. I said confidently that I would be able to find a neighbor who had a phone I could use. Which turned out to be more difficult than I thought.

Then I remembered that there was a Holiday Inn Express across from the small airport about 25 minutes from our cabin. So I drove there, and explained my dilemma to a woman named Isabel at the front desk. She was kind enough to let me use a room for two hours to do my interviews.

When I finished, I presented Isabel with a signed copy of my book.

One of the radio interviews, with Steve Fast of WJBC, can be downloaded via ITunes.

Book Launch Party

Susan Biddle and Carol McKay hosted a great book party last night in honor of the publication of my book. Susan is a staff photographer at the Washington Post (who has just taken a buy-out), and Carol is a picture editor at U.S. News & World Report. I worked with both of them at the White House during the Reagan administration.

So many great friends and colleagues joined us at Susan's house in Silver Spring, Maryland. Because it was an unseasonably cool Washington evening, the party was mostly outside. I made a short presentation about how I got started photographing Sen. Obama and explained how the book came about.

Several guests arrived with their books in hand for me to sign, and many more purchased books at the party. For me, it was a memorable evening, one I shall never forget.

Presentation and book signing on August 9 in Washington

I will be making a presentation and signing books at the Edison Place Gallery in Washington, D.C. on Saturday, Aug. 9 between 2 and 4PM.

The backdrop for this event is "The Eyes of History" exhibition--a selection of winning images from the annual White House News Photographers Association contest. (Included in the exhibit are three of my Obama images.)

The event is open to the public. A limited number of books will be available for sale; you may also bring a previously purchased copy if you want me to sign it.

The Gallery entrance is 702 Eighth Street, NW.  One block west of the Verizon Center. Gallery Place is the closest metro stop.
